Half of Spaniards Reconsider Traveling to the U.S. Amid Political Concerns

Political uncertainty and policy decisions, such as Donald Trump's tariffs and strict immigration measures, have significantly affected Spanish travelers' perception of the United States. According to a survey by the budget travel website Holidayguru, many Spaniards are now reconsidering their plans to visit the country.
The survey reveals that 50% of respondents are hesitant to travel to the U.S. in 2025, citing increased border controls and recent detentions of European and Canadian tourists. The situation has prompted countries like Germany, Denmark, Portugal, and the United Kingdom to issue travel warnings regarding the U.S.
Beyond security concerns, emotional discomfort also plays a role in the reluctance to visit. The poll indicates that 58% of Spaniards would feel "uncomfortable" traveling to the U.S. due to its current political climate.
A striking 80% of respondents believe that U.S. policies harm the country’s image as a tourist destination. This sentiment is significant given that the United States remains the world's third most-visited country.
Despite the concerns, only 31% of surveyed Spaniards had plans to visit the U.S. in 2025, while 69% ruled it out. In 2024, nearly 900,000 Spanish travelers visited the country, according to the Spanish Confederation of Travel Agencies.
The Holidayguru survey was conducted between April 2 and 3, 2025, with a sample of 2,000 users.
