The government of the Netherlands has issued a code red travel advisory for Venezuela, urging its citizens to avoid all travel to the South American country due to serious security and political concerns. The Dutch Foreign Ministry cited arbitrary detentions, political instability, widespread crime, and a lack of judicial guarantees as primary reasons for the heightened alert, particularly following the controversial 2024 presidential elections.

Whatever your situation, do not travel there,” the Dutch authorities warned in an official statement. The advisory also cautions against sailing in Venezuelan territorial waters or venturing near land borders, noting the presence of armed groups that further elevate the risks to foreign visitors.

In addition, the ministry clarified that the Dutch embassy in Caracas would have limited capacity to provide assistance should citizens face emergencies, underscoring the seriousness of the current security climate.

Venezuela’s response was swift and defiant. Foreign Minister Yván Gil dismissed the advisory as “ridiculous” and a “failed attempt by fascism to destabilize the country.” Gil criticized the Netherlands for what he described as a colonial mindset and accused the Dutch government of seeking attention through fearmongering.

Venezuela is the safest and most stable country on the entire continent,” Gil asserted, reaffirming the government’s commitment to promoting tourism and business despite growing international concern.

The advisory from the Netherlands adds to the list of countries expressing alarm over Venezuela’s internal situation and reflects the increasing diplomatic friction between the Maduro government and Western nations.
