Puerto Rico Reports Surge in International Tourism at IPW 2026, Unveils "Awaken Your Senses" Campaign
Discover Puerto Rico has announced a substantial surge in international tourism demand, driven largely by long-haul travelers from Europe and Latin America. Making the announcement at the U.S. Travel Association’s IPW in Greater Fort Lauderdale, destination officials revealed a shifting visitor profile that positions the island as one of the fastest-growing hotspots in the Caribbean.
The growth follows a stellar operational year in 2025, during which Puerto Rico expanded its international air seat capacity by 16%. Standout source markets included Spain (+20%), Colombia (+54%), and Mexico (+54%). These capacity increases converted directly into physical arrivals, with European travelers to San Juan rising by 23%, South American arrivals up 47%, and Spanish visitation skyrocketing by 116% year-over-year.
"Puerto Rico is entering a new chapter of international tourism growth," noted Storm Tussey, Chief Marketing Officer of Discover Puerto Rico. "We are seeing travelers increasingly choose the Island not only because of accessibility and connectivity, but because they are looking for authentic cultural experiences that create emotional connection and lasting memories."
Long-Haul Momentum and Strategic Route Goals
The positive momentum has shown strong continuity into early 2026. Despite a 12% contraction in total international seat capacity—a dip primarily caused by the cancellation of shorter, inter-island Caribbean routes—long-haul corridors have remained highly resilient. Air seats originating from Spain are projected to jump an additional 46% this year. Furthermore, European and South American arrivals through the first quarter of 2026 are already tracking upwards at 29% and 11%, respectively.
To solidify this trajectory, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company is collaborating directly with Discover Puerto Rico to lock down approximately 10 new direct international routes. These negotiations are specifically targeting key hubs across Europe, Latin America, and select global markets.
Attracting the High-Yield Traveler
The overarching strategy marks a deliberate transition toward capturing a more geographically diverse traveler demographic. Tourism data indicates that these long-haul visitors generally record longer lengths of stay and higher average trip expenditures, providing superior economic yield for local communities.
"This is not simply about increasing visitor volume," Tussey emphasized. "It's about attracting travelers who truly want to engage with Puerto Rico's culture, gastronomy, music, nature, and local communities. That creates stronger long-term value for the destination and for the people of Puerto Rico."
This vision is anchored by the island's newly launched global marketing campaign, "Awaken Your Senses," which leans heavily into experiential travel, local immersion, and emotional connection. Moving through the remainder of 2026, Puerto Rico is also positioning itself as a primary Caribbean nexus for live entertainment, large-scale concerts, and culinary tourism, using high-impact international partnerships to safeguard its regional competitiveness.
