Riviera Maya Plans Quintana Roo–Yucatán Cenote Corridor

The tourism authorities in Riviera Maya are developing a major Cenote Corridor to link many of the natural sinkholes (cenotes) between Quintana Roo and Yucatán.
This corridor will include destinations such as Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, Valladolid, and Mérida, promoting alternative and sustainable tourism beyond just beach resorts.
Officials have said that each cenote will be rigorously evaluated for sustainability, water quality, accessibility, and responsible management before being included in the formal corridor.
The proposal is meant to diversify tourism offerings in the region and help distribute tourist flows more evenly, reducing crowding in high-traffic beach areas.
The corridor is planned to be officially presented at the 2026 International Tourism Fair in Spain, aligning with marketing goals and international exposure.
Over the long term, this could strengthen Riviera Maya and Yucatán's reputation as destinations for immersive nature experiences, increasing economic benefits in less exploited areas.
