The Government of Spain unveiled a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing carbon emissions generated by tourism, targeting environmentally responsible practices across hotels, transport and visitor attractions.

The plan includes incentives for hotels to transition to renewable energy, adopt waste-reduction programs and implement digital monitoring systems to report sustainability progress.

Spain's Ministry of Tourism confirmed that destinations such as Mallorca, Tenerife and Barcelona will serve as pilot cities, testing new “smart tourism zones” that combine sustainability with real-time visitor-flow management.

Industry associations say this initiative will help Spain transition from volume-driven tourism to a model focused on high-value travelers, longer stays and cultural immersion.

Local businesses—particularly small and medium enterprises—will receive training and financial support to adopt sustainable practices without compromising competitiveness.

The government believes that the new strategy will protect natural resources and preserve Spain’s reputation as the world leader in sustainable tourism innovation.

Analysts forecast that Spain’s move could set a benchmark for the entire European Union, forcing neighboring destinations to accelerate their own sustainability policies.
