New forecasts by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) suggest that Spain’s tourism industry is on track to contribute €260.5 billion to the economy in 2025, making up about 16% of national GDP.

The projection reflects continued strength in both international arrivals and visitor spending, despite broader economic headwinds like inflation and rising energy costs. Domestic tourism also contributes significantly, helping to smooth out seasonal fluctuations.

Spain’s performance is reinforcing its global reputation as a leading tourism destination. Destination regions beyond the typical hotspots are benefitting as government efforts to diversify visitor flows gain traction.

Hotels, restaurants, and travel services are scaling up operations, with more offerings in cultural travel, gastronomic tourism, and nature experiences to meet evolving traveler preferences.

However, challenges remain—balancing high demand with infrastructure strain, managing rising accommodation costs, and addressing local concerns about overtourism in certain areas.

Policymakers are emphasizing sustainable growth: enhancing transport connectivity, preserving natural landscapes, regulating short-term rentals, and ensuring tourism benefits reach smaller and rural communities too.
