UN Tourism Chief Wraps Up Landmark Visit to China

UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili has successfully wrapped up a high-profile visit to China, reinforcing strategic partnerships and advancing sustainable tourism initiatives. Engaging with government officials, industry leaders, and international agencies, the visit deepened collaboration between UN Tourism and China, a key player in the sector.

During discussions, Pololikashvili emphasized China’s leadership in digital transformation and its commitment to making tourism a pillar of sustainable development. He reaffirmed support for China’s Global Development Initiative (GDI) and its vision of a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind, aligning with the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

In Shanghai, meetings with Chen Jining, Member of the CPC Central Committee, focused on regional tourism growth, digital innovation, and investment opportunities. Further engagements in Hainan Province included discussions with senior officials on strengthening ties between UN Tourism and China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

The delegation also expanded its private sector partnerships, notably with Trip.com Group, exploring digital innovation and sustainable travel solutions. The visit to Trip.com’s headquarters marked a step toward deeper industry collaboration.

At the Bo’ao Forum for Asia 2025, Pololikashvili highlighted tourism’s role in economic cooperation and sustainability. Additionally, talks with Pansy Ho, Vice Chairman of the Global Tourism Economy Forum (GTEF), reinforced tourism’s impact on global economic growth and set the stage for GTEF 2025.

This visit solidifies UN Tourism’s commitment to China as a leader in global tourism and paves the way for strengthened international cooperation and investment in the sector.
