UN Tourism Launches Innovative WhatsApp-Based Education Program to Empower Hospitality Sector
UN Tourism has launched the Digital Course on Hospitality via WhatsApp, a pioneering educational initiative designed for professionals, entrepreneurs, and small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) across the hospitality sector.
First introduced in Spain, this first-of-its-kind mobile program marks a significant step forward in digital education by delivering high-level training through a platform utilized daily by billions of people.
Developed in partnership with the Fundación Mahou San Miguel, the course leverages the foundation's extensive expertise in Spain’s hospitality and food service industries. To maximize regional impact and support workforce development, registration has opened with an initial 2,000 places made available to residents in Spain. These initial slots are fully subsidized, removing financial barriers to ensure broad access to critical skills development across the local tourism ecosystem.
A Flexible, Mobile-First Learning Framework
The program is engineered to address the time constraints frequently faced by hospitality workers and small business owners. By utilizing a familiar messaging format, the course provides a highly accessible, flexible, and micro-learning experience tailored to the modern workforce. Key structural elements of the curriculum include:
Business Management: Practical lessons focused on optimizing day-to-day operations and financial efficiency.
Digital Marketing: Strategic modules designed to improve online visibility and customer loyalty.
Sustainability Integration: Actionable approaches to adopting nature-positive practices and promoting local products.
Professional Certification: Participants who successfully complete all training modules will receive an official joint certificate from UN Tourism and Fundación Mahou San Miguel.
Driving Local Innovation and Competitiveness
The primary goal of this mobile-first training is to enhance frontline customer service standards while fostering operational innovation within independent enterprises. By embedding lessons on local gastronomy and cultural experiences into the short, digestible format, the program helps small operators turn regional authenticity into a distinct competitive advantage. This strategy directly supports destination stewardship by ensuring the financial benefits of the visitor economy filter deeply into local communities.
Shaikha Al Nuwais, Secretary-General of UN Tourism, hailed the initiative as a major milestone for global mobility and human capital development. She emphasized that innovation in education is essential to address the evolving structural challenges facing the modern tourism economy. By transforming a daily communication tool into an educational platform, the initiative enables immediate, applicable learning that strengthens local economies and elevates the overall traveler experience.
