WTTC Reports Record $11.6 Trillion Global Tourism Contribution
The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) released its 2026 Economic Impact Research today, confirming that the sector has officially entered its "best year ever."
In 2025, Travel & Tourism contributed an unprecedented $11.6 trillion to the global economy, outpacing the growth of the wider global market. With 1.54 billion international arrivals recorded—equivalent to 4.2 million people traveling every day—the industry has successfully surpassed both its 2019 benchmarks and all post-pandemic recovery targets.
The report highlights a clear regional divergence, with the Asia-Pacific region leading the charge with an 8.1% growth rate, reaching $3.29 trillion. In contrast, North America saw a significantly slower expansion of just 1.0%, reflecting affordability challenges and a more mature market dynamic. WTTC President Gloria Guevara emphasized that this "defining moment" requires governments to treat tourism as a strategic priority, enabling policies that support open borders, smarter investment, and enhanced connectivity to ensure growth remains inclusive and resilient.
This "record-breaking performance" translates into more meaningful and intentional journey planning. Chase Travel CEO Jason Wynn noted that travelers are now prioritizing high-value experiences over mere volume, a shift that is forcing the industry to invest in seamless end-to-end journeys.
As the sector continues to be the fastest-growing segment of the global economy, the focus is shifting toward sustainability and labor development to ensure the 1.8 million new jobs supported by tourism remain viable and rewarding for local communities.
