In a historic move for Pacific Northwest aviation, Alaska Airlines announced today, January 7, its largest-ever fleet expansion, ordering 105 Boeing 737-10 aircraft and five 787 Dreamliners.

This massive investment is a cornerstone of the "Alaska Accelerate" plan, aimed at transforming the carrier from a regional powerhouse into a global player.

The addition of widebody 787 Dreamliners is particularly significant, as it confirms the airline's intent to launch long-haul service to Europe and Asia directly from its West Coast hubs, potentially challenging legacy carriers on premium international routes.

This announcement comes at a time when air travel storylines for 2026 are dominated by a widening gap between premium and budget experiences.

While Alaska is doubling down on fuel-efficient and state-of-the-art aircraft to support its growth, other budget carriers are struggling with financial turmoil.

The new order also includes options for an additional 35 aircraft, securing delivery slots through 2035. For travelers, this means more direct-flight options and the debut of a new "global livery" that will soon be a common sight at international gateways from London to Tokyo.
