Antigua and Barbuda Celebrates Launch of LIAT 20 Route to Guyana

Antigua and Barbuda marked a milestone in Caribbean connectivity with the launch of LIAT 20’s new flight service from V.C. Bird International Airport in Antigua to Cheddi Jagan International Airport in Guyana on November 19, 2024.

This development promises to strengthen ties between the Caribbean and South America, opening new opportunities for business and leisure travelers.

The inaugural flight was celebrated with a welcome ceremony attended by Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne, Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority CEO Colin C. James, LIAT 20 CEO Hafsah Abdulsalam, and Chairman Ambassador Davin Joseph. They were joined in Guyana by Minister of Public Works Bishop Juan A. Edghill, Guyana Tourism Authority Director Kamrul Baksh, and officials from Guyana’s airport authority.

A New Chapter in Regional Travel

LIAT 20 CEO Hafsah Abdulsalam described the new route as a “proud moment for regional travel,” emphasizing the airline's commitment to providing reliable connectivity and a premier travel experience. Prime Minister Browne highlighted the significance of LIAT as a "quintessential institution" for CARICOM, underscoring the need for regional integration through enhanced mobility. He also announced plans to expand the airline’s fleet with a 125-seater aircraft, further strengthening Antigua’s position as a hub for South American and Caribbean travel.

Collaboration to Boost Regional Tourism

The launch also included commitments to deepen cooperation between Guyana and Antigua and Barbuda. Guyana Tourism Authority Director Kamrul Baksh revealed plans to collaborate with Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority CEO Colin C. James to develop itineraries promoting travel between the two destinations. This initiative aims to attract more travelers, enhance regional tourism, and increase seat sales for LIAT 20 and other carriers.

James emphasized the critical role of partnerships between CARICOM nations and regional airlines in fostering tourism growth. Both leaders expressed optimism about the positive economic impact and increased exploration opportunities this new service will bring to the Caribbean and South America.
