Avelo Airlines Debuts First International Connection with Direct Flights to the Caribbean
In a historic expansion of its flight network, Avelo Airlines has officially commenced its first-ever nonstop international service. The low-cost carrier’s inaugural flight departed from Wilmington International Airport in North Carolina on December 24, heading for the white sands of Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. This move marks a dual milestone, as it serves as the airline's first venture outside the U.S. and the airport’s very first scheduled international route.
The new service is scheduled to operate twice weekly, with flights departing on Wednesdays and Saturdays. To maintain efficiency and comfort on the three-hour journey, the airline is utilizing Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft. By bypassing traditional large hub airports, the carrier is offering coastal North Carolina residents a more direct and stress-free path to one of the most popular Caribbean beach destinations.
To celebrate the launch, the airline introduced aggressive promotional one-way fares starting at under $100. This pricing strategy is intended to make tropical travel more accessible for budget-conscious families during the peak holiday season. The high volume of bookings for the initial flights suggests a strong appetite for affordable, direct connections to sun-and-sand markets.
The inaugural departure was marked by festive ceremonies at the terminal, featuring local treats and a celebratory atmosphere for the first group of passengers. Airport officials have praised the addition, noting that the presence of U.S. Customs and Border Protection now allows the facility to function as a legitimate leisure travel gateway. This upgrade is expected to stimulate broader economic and tourism growth for the Wilmington region.
The expansion into the Dominican Republic signifies a major shift for the carrier, which has primarily focused on its U.S. domestic network of 15 destinations since its inception. Industry experts view this as part of a larger strategic pivot where budget carriers are increasingly challenging major airlines by offering international connectivity from smaller, underserved regional airports.
By establishing a base of operations in Wilmington earlier this year, the airline has positioned itself to further explore "untapped" international opportunities. This Punta Cana route is being closely monitored as a test case for future expansion. If demand remains high, the airline may look to add more island markets to its growing map, further cementing its role as a disruptor in the aviation industry.
As the 2026 travel season approaches, the success of this first international link could redefine how regional airports contribute to global tourism. For now, travelers in the Cape Fear region are enjoying the newfound convenience of reaching the Caribbean without a layover, signaling a bright future for international connectivity in the South.
