IATA Warns of Impending Flight Cancellations Amid Deepening Jet Fuel Crisis
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) issued a sobering warning today, stating that European airlines could face widespread flight cancellations by the end of May due to a critical jet fuel shortage.
Director General Willie Walsh noted that the crisis, which has already begun disrupting operations in parts of Asia, is no longer a theoretical threat but a looming operational reality. The shortage is driven by a perfect storm of geopolitical supply disruptions and logistical bottlenecks that have left the continent with only a few weeks of reserve supply.
To mitigate the impact on the 2026 summer travel season, IATA is urging governments to implement coordinated rationing plans and provide slot relief to carriers forced to ground aircraft. This fuel squeeze is expected to drive airfares even higher as airlines compete for limited fuel stocks and attempt to cover the exponentially rising costs.
For the international traveler, this development signals a period of extreme itinerary instability, with the risk of last-minute cancellations becoming a significant factor in trip planning. The industry is calling for emergency energy policies to protect global air connectivity
