In a remarkable turnaround, Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) have exhibited the highest post-pandemic growth in air passenger traffic. According to the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA), the region experienced a notable 5.3% increase in passenger traffic this past May. This surge underscores the robust recovery of the aviation sector within LAC, highlighting a renewed demand for regional connectivity.

The intraregional international market within LAC has emerged as a standout performer, recording the highest percentage growth in May 2024. With 4.45 million passengers, this market segment surged by 13.2% compared to May 2023. Additionally, from January to May 2024, the intraregional market achieved a remarkable 17% growth, showcasing its resilience and pivotal role in the region's aviation recovery.

Notably, the intraregional segment was the last to exceed pre-pandemic levels until July 2023. This year, it has also surpassed 2019 figures by 6%, reflecting a significant rebound. This trend indicates the growing demand for travel within LAC, fueled by a combination of increased tourism and business activities across neighboring countries.

ALTA's Executive Director and CEO, José Ricardo Botelho, emphasized the significance of these achievements. He highlighted the essential role of aviation in the region, acknowledging the industry's resilience and the efforts of countless professionals. Botelho also urged governments to prioritize aviation in their agendas, recognizing its vast potential to contribute to the region's economic and social well-being.

The data reveals that passenger traffic to, from, and within LAC grew by 5.3% in May 2024, mobilizing 38.1 million people—1.9 million more than in May 2023. Between January and May, the region saw a total of 197.2 million passengers, marking an 8% increase over the previous year. Intraregional travel continued to lead the way with a 14.7% growth, highlighting the region's strong recovery trajectory.

Domestic markets in Colombia and Peru, alongside traffic between Mexico and the United States, were major contributors to the overall growth, accounting for over 50% of the total increase. Venezuela and Costa Rica also recorded significant gains, with passenger numbers rising by 37% and 19%, respectively. Meanwhile, extra-regional travel showed a 7.8% increase, driven by routes between LAC and the United States, as well as Europe and Africa.

Colombia, in particular, stood out in the domestic market, leading for the second consecutive month with a 20% increase in passengers. Other countries like Chile, Venezuela, and Panama also experienced growth in domestic traffic, whereas Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina faced declines. These trends underscore the varied dynamics within the region, influenced by political, economic, and social factors.

As Latin America and the Caribbean continue their post-pandemic recovery, the aviation sector's resilience and growth potential remain evident. The ongoing collaboration between public and private sectors will be crucial in sustaining this momentum and ensuring the continued prosperity of the region's air travel industry.
