Australia’s Most Expensive Passport Fees Take Effect
As of January 1, 2026, the cost of obtaining or renewing an Australian passport has risen to AU$422 for a standard 10-year document.
This CPI adjustment confirms Australia’s position as the provider of the world's most expensive travel document. Despite the price hike, DFAT (Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade) reports that demand remains at record levels, with over 2.1 million passports issued in the previous year.
Travelers are also being warned of new digital requirements for those heading to Europe later this year, including the ETIAS authorization and the Entry/Exit System (EES).
Additionally, within the state of Victoria, a new "free travel" initiative for youth under 18 has officially launched today, aimed at reducing the cost-of-living for local families and encouraging the use of public transport for school and leisure.
