The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) released a major report warning that the travel industry could face a global workforce shortfall of more than 43 million workers by 2035.

According to the report, Travel & Tourism is expected to add 91 million new jobs worldwide in the next decade, but demographic shifts and skills gaps may prevent the sector from fulfilling that potential.

Key problem areas include low-skilled roles and hospitality positions that rely on high-touch, human-centered service—jobs that are difficult to automate.

The WTTC is urging governments, training bodies, and industry players to invest heavily in workforce development, vocational education, and cross-border labor mobility to avoid a talent crunch.

Many countries may need to rethink visa policies, labor regulations and training incentives to attract young professionals into tourism careers.

If unaddressed, the shortfall could limit the sector’s growth and affect service quality for travelers.

The warning comes as the tourism industry is still recovering strongly from the global slump and faces the dual task of scaling up and becoming more resilient.
