AIDA Cruises, a leading brand of Carnival Corporation & plc, continues to push the boundaries of sustainable cruising by testing advanced biofuels.

On September 8, 2024, in the port of Rotterdam, the AIDAprima cruise ship was refueled for the first time with 100% renewable Bio Marine Fuel (BMF100), a sustainable biofuel supplied by VARO Energy. This fuel is produced from advanced feedstocks such as organic waste or residues. The initiative marks a significant step in AIDA Cruises' ongoing efforts to decarbonize its fleet and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a minimum of 85% compared to conventional fossil fuels.

Exploring the Future of Sustainable Cruising

Felix Eichhorn, President of AIDA Cruises, highlighted the cruise line's commitment to sustainability. "We are focused on identifying advanced fuels and technologies we can use to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In our search for the fuel mix of the future, we have been gathering valuable experience through trials using various biofuels since 2022," Eichhorn explained. The AIDAprima’s upcoming voyages from Hamburg through Norway’s fjords will serve as a test phase for this new biofuel, with the results potentially influencing future fuel choices across AIDA's entire fleet.

VARO Energy’s Role in the Decarbonization Journey

VARO Energy, a key partner in this pilot project, is playing a vital role in the supply and development of sustainable marine fuels. Since 2019, VARO has successfully developed a range of biofuels for marine bunkering, including B30/B100, HVO, and other low FAME biofuel blends. "We are excited to supply AIDAprima, working with AIDA and Carnival Corporation & plc, the world's largest cruise company," said Sacha Konan, Country President / VP Commercial Benelux & France at VARO Energy. The Rotterdam refueling reflects VARO Energy’s ongoing efforts to support the decarbonization journey of its marine customers, aligning with the industry’s adaptation to new environmental regulations.

AIDA Cruises’ Broader Investment in Alternative Fuels

AIDA Cruises has been investing heavily in alternative fuels and technologies as part of its broader decarbonization strategy. The company prioritizes second-generation biofuels, which are produced from organic waste and residual materials, as they do not require significant modifications to existing ship engines and tank infrastructure. These biofuels are a vital part of AIDA Cruises' comprehensive approach to reducing its carbon footprint, offering a straightforward yet effective solution to significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Complementary Sustainability Measures

In addition to biofuels, AIDA Cruises is leveraging other alternative energy sources such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) and shore power to reduce emissions. The company has also invested in onboard battery systems that store surplus energy for use during peak times, minimizing fuel consumption. Through collaborations with various partners, AIDA Cruises is continually exploring innovative solutions, including the use of renewable and synthetic fuels, to advance its sustainability agenda and reduce reliance on traditional fossil fuels.

Leading the Way in Sustainable Cruising

AIDA Cruises was among the first of Carnival Corporation & plc’s cruise lines to test biofuels and remains at the forefront of sustainability in the cruise industry. These biofuel trials support Carnival Corporation's overarching goal of achieving net-zero emissions from ship operations by 2050. As the cruise line continues to explore innovative fuel options and sustainable practices, it is clear that AIDA Cruises is committed to leading the way towards a greener future for the entire industry.
