Julia Simpson to Miss WTTC Global Summit in Rome due to Health Issues

Julia Simpson, President and CEO of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), will not attend the upcoming Global Summit in Rome, scheduled for September 28–30. The executive, considered one of the most influential voices in the sector, was forced to withdraw due to illness, according to the organization.
The announcement came as a surprise to the industry, as Simpson had been expected to play a leading role at the gathering, where the challenges and opportunities facing the global travel industry will be addressed. The WTTC extended its support and best wishes for her recovery, underscoring the importance of her leadership at a critical time for the sector.
To ensure continuity, the Council has appointed Gloria Guevara, former WTTC President and CEO, as interim leader for the Rome Summit. Guevara’s experience and deep knowledge of the organization are seen as essential to guaranteeing the event proceeds smoothly and without disruption.
WTTC Chairman Greg O’Hara publicly expressed his support for Simpson and thanked Guevara for stepping in to guide the Council during this period. Chair-Elect Manfredi Lefebvre also emphasized that the organization remains confident in the Summit’s success despite the absence of its current CEO.
The 25th edition of the Global Summit will gather government leaders, CEOs, and tourism experts from around the world. The agenda includes discussions on sustainability, innovation, investment, and emerging trends in luxury travel, along with policy debates that will help shape the industry’s future.
Although Julia Simpson’s absence represents an unexpected turn, the WTTC stresses that the Summit will remain a vital space for strategic dialogue and decision-making. In the meantime, attention will remain focused on Simpson’s health and the hope for her full recovery, which the global tourism community awaits with great anticipation.
