Tanzania Hosts UN Tourism’s Landmark Gastronomy Forum

Building on the success of its inaugural edition in Zimbabwe, UN Tourism, in partnership with the Basque Culinary Center and the United Republic of Tanzania, will host the Second Regional Forum on Gastronomy Tourism for Africa in Arusha from 23–25 April 2025. The event aims to position gastronomy tourism as a driver of sustainable growth, cultural preservation, and economic opportunity across the continent.
Recognized as a pillar of the UN Tourism Agenda for Africa – Tourism for Inclusive Growth, gastronomy tourism enhances the tourism value chain, empowers local communities, and promotes destination competitiveness. With support from Tanzania’s leadership, including President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Tourism Minister Dr. Pindi Hazara Chana, the Forum will bring together policymakers, chefs, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders to explore how Africa’s rich culinary heritage can strengthen its global tourism appeal.
Key discussions will focus on cultural heritage preservation, community empowerment, branding strategies, and sustainable food systems. Experts will highlight how gastronomy tourism can diversify local economies by integrating agriculture, tourism, and small-scale enterprises into a more resilient and inclusive sector.
Zurab Pololikashvili, UN Tourism Secretary-General, emphasized: “Returning to Tanzania allows us to unite chefs, business leaders, and policymakers in harnessing gastronomy tourism as a tool for economic growth and cultural exchange.”
Dr. Pindi Hazara Chana, Tanzania’s Minister of Tourism, added: “This Forum will spotlight Tanzania’s culinary diversity, encouraging meaningful dialogue on how gastronomy can drive sustainable tourism and economic transformation.”
With live culinary showcases, expert panels, and case studies, the Forum will celebrate Africa’s rich gastronomic identity, reinforcing its potential to attract international travelers, enhance regional branding, and drive investment in the tourism sector.
