If you've ever dreamed of experiencing something like Frozen, then you should know that Elsa's castle exists in Quebec, Canada. Well, maybe not literally, but the Hôtel de Glace is the closest real-life equivalent. It is the only ice hotel in North America, built anew each year since 2000 because it melts away with the arrival of spring.
Not only is the hotel's exterior made of ice, but so is everything inside—from the beds to the bar's glasses. This ephemeral work of art undergoes an annual transformation, with a unique themed design each year, making it both a challenge for its creators and a breathtaking spectacle for visitors.
The Frozen Palace That Defies Winter
Located just 20 minutes from downtown Quebec, the hotel is open only between January and March. It spans over 3,000 square meters and is built using more than 15,000 tons of snow. The hotel features a grand hall, themed suites, an ice skating rink, and even a chapel and a slide—naturally, all made of ice.
Art lovers will especially appreciate the intricate ice sculptures decorating the corridors, rooms, cinemas, and galleries, each showcasing impressive designs that add to the magical atmosphere.

Sleeping Without Freezing
One of the most common concerns is: how do you sleep surrounded by ice? The answer is simple: with thermal sleeping bags and deer skins that retain body heat, as heating is obviously not an option. As a result, room temperatures remain between -3°C and -5°C (26°F and 23°F).
For those looking to warm up, the hotel offers a Nordic relaxation area with outdoor hot tubs and a sauna. For thrill-seekers, activities like sledding, skiing, or snowshoeing through nearby forests provide an exhilarating experience. And for those visiting on Valentine's Day, there's nothing more romantic than toasting with champagne in the hotel’s colorfully lit ice bar.
The best part? If you’ve already been, the invitation is just as exciting each year as it was the first time!
