Special Events Spice Up Caribbean Summer Travel

Summertime in the Caribbean means an array of live music concerts, literary and cultural festivals, sports competitions and culinary events combined with the region’s warm and breezy temperatures, sunny skies and crisp blue waters to make for memorable vacation experiences.
This summer, resorts at some of the Caribbean’s lesser-visited destinations are extending special rates and packages tied to special events. At the Turks & Caicos’ Sands at Grace Bay, the Fourth of July holiday weekend will feature a Fourth Night Free package designed to coincide with the destination’s annual "Race for the Conch" open-water swimming competition scheduled for July 5.
Sands at Grace Bay is providing guests with free transportation to the race, held each year on Providenciales’ Grace Bay Beach. Open to world-class competitive and recreational swimmers, the event includes a half-mile swim, a one-mile swim and a 2.4-mile swim. Funds from the event are donated to local reef protection initiatives and children’s charities.
The fourth night free promotion applies to new bookings in all room categories for stays of four consecutive nights or more from now through Dec. 20, 2014.
Regional Caribbean airline Winair is offering discounted fares on flights from Guadeloupe, St. Maarten and other Caribbean destinations to Dominica, where the Dominica Jazz ‘n Creole 2014 festival is scheduled to take place from June 1 to 8.
Winar’s special Jazz ‘n Creole roundtrip fares include $216 for flights between Guadeloupe and Dominica and $252 for flights between St. Maarten and Dominica. WINAIR flies to Dominica on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Back at the Turks & Caicos’ Grace Bay Beach, the Alexandra Resort is offering “Summer Savings” featuring 20 off published rates on studios, based on a minimum five night stay. The resort is also offering 30 percent off published rates for one- and two-bedroom suites, and four-bedroom penthouse accommodations, with minimum stays of four nights.
The resort is also offering four-night family packages featuring a $100 resort credit, dinner for four and shuttle transportation to the Blue Haven Resort and free accommodations for up to two children 16 and under. Travelers who reserve and pre-pay in full receive an additional 10 percent discount.
In Tobago, the Magdalena Grand Beach & Golf Resort has launched the Grand Experience, an all-inclusive plan starting at $278 per person, per night, double occupancy for an oceanfront room. The offer applies to reservations of five nights or more through Dec. 18, 2014.
The Grand Experience plan combines accommodations with all meals, non-alcoholic beverages, house-branded alcoholic beverages, domestic beers, house wines by the glass and cocktails. The plan also includes tennis, pool volleyball, cricket, power and nature walks, football, cycling, and other activities plus complimentary shuttle bus to and from Pigeon Point Beach.
