Nepal Raises Mount Everest Climbing Fee to $15,000
Nepal is increasing the cost of climbing Mount Everest, raising the permit fee from $11,000 to $15,000—a 36% hike and the first increase in nearly a decade. The new fee will take effect in September and apply to the popular spring climbing season along the standard South Col route.
The fees for other seasons will also rise, with autumn permits costing $7,500 and winter permits $3,750. Despite the increase, expedition organizers say it is unlikely to deter climbers, as Everest remains a top destination for mountaineers worldwide.
Nepal, home to eight of the world's 14 highest peaks, relies heavily on revenue from climbing permits. Officials have not specified how the additional funds will be used, though experts hope they will contribute to environmental protection and safety improvements on the mountain.
