Dedicated to Santiago Alvarez, one of the greatest documentary filmmakers and a role model of artistic creativity and commitment to the just causes, the Festival encourages the promotion of works dedicated to the great themes of the contemporary world and a reflection on the role played by documentary films in our time.
At a time when mass media are trying to establish a globalized culture and a one-track thought, documentary films stand for an artistic genre that bears out its resilience to manipulation as it rescues multiple realities silenced or misrepresented by the media.
OFFICIAL CONTEST
Filmmakers from any country, with works filmed in 35mm, 16mm or digital format, are entitled to sign up for the festival as long as their works were shot before 2011. The organizers have admitted DVD copies of works shot in 35 mm or 16 mm. All works must be dubbed or subtitled in Spanish. The competition also includes work projects of documentary films.
The Official Jury, made up of personalities from cinema and culture in general, awards the "Santiago Álvarez" Grand Prix and also a First Prize, Second Prize and Third Prize, plus awards in the directing, writing, editing, photography and sound design categories. For new creators, the jury grants the Best Debut Award and a Special Prize for the best work collectively produced by filmmakers under 35 years of age.
The International School of Film and Television of San Antonio de los Baños grants a Special Prize consisting of a grant to the International Documentary Workshop. The "Santiago Álvarez" Office at ICAIC and the Amazonia Films Foundation present the Santiago Alvarez Grand Prix. Other cultural institutions will present awards decided by juries of their own.
