Another Cruise Liner Drops Anchor in Barbados
The island welcomed yet another cruise liner to its shores yesterday when the Seabourn Quest docked for the very first time at the Bridgetown Port. The luxury vessel, which carries 500 passengers and 350 crew members, will be making three more calls to the island during the winter season.
During his speech, Minister of International Transport, George Hutson, stated that the ship was a welcome addition to the cruise schedule, noting that at a time when many cruise lines were pushing “mega-ships”, the need for a luxury element to attract high-end cruise passengers was also essential.
He stated that cruise tourism was beginning to expand in the island and across the region, with the numbers here now rising to the three-quarters of a million mark annually. Hutson also outlined the government’s push to having cruise ships stay longer in port in order to have passengers enjoy fully what Barbados has to offer.
Noting that it was the first trip for the ship to the Caribbean, Captain Magnus Bengtsson expressed his opinion that it would be one of many as the clientele were very interested in visiting destinations in this part of the world.
He also stated that the ship would be docking from eight in the morning and leaving at nine in the night, giving passengers a good opportunity to head to the island’s attractions.
