The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism has terminated its agreements with international public relations and advertising agencies in favor of an in-house approach, said Obie Wilchcombe, the country’s minister of tourism, in an announcement that “surprised” some local tourism stakeholders, according to local press reports.

The Nassau Guardian reports Wilchcombe said a review of the agreements produced many similar contracts with high fees for work which was not always “received or required.” The contacted firms have reportedly been terminated, and the Bahamas will award future public relations and advertising contracts on a “project-driven” basis.

The move ends Ministry partnerships of up to 20 years in length with firms in the U.S., Canada, Germany, France and the U.K., according to the report. Officials at the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism officials based in Plantation, Fla., did not respond to repeated requests for comment.
