Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort Villages & Spa Closes to Assess Hurricane Irene Damage
By Brian Major

Sandals Resorts has closed Beaches Resorts’ Turks & Caicos Resort Villages & Spas to new arrivals for 15 days after suffering “landscaping debris throughout the resort” in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, which struck the islands Wednesday night. Guests remained safely on property during the storm, according to the company.

Sandals officials are currently completing a “full review” of the property to “reassess the situation and provide additional details” to confirm a reopening date. Guests scheduled to travel to Beaches Turks & Caicos while the resort remains closed will receive a full credit valid for up to one year towards a future stay at any Sandals Resorts or Beaches Resorts in the Caribbean.

Separately, operations at Turks & Caicos’ Providenciales International Airport resumed today, Aug. 25, following its closure Tuesday in anticipation of Hurricane Irene, which struck the island Wednesday causing widespread flooding and landscaping damage at some resorts.

Operations resumed at 12 noon on Aug. 25, according to the TCI Airports Authority, which added that JAGS McCartney Airport also is now fully functional. In Providenciales, the Sands at Grace Bay resort suffered landscaping damage and broken trees, but avoided structural damage, according to a spokeswoman. The resort also suffered some flooding, and its hospitality lounge, spa and gym remained closed while spaces are cleaned up.
