Bermuda to Complete Dock Repairs in Time for Norwegian Breakaway Debut

Repairs to the Heritage Wharf cruise ship pier at Bermuda’s Royal Naval Dockyard will be complete in time for the May 15 maiden call of Norwegian Cruise Line’s 4,000-passenger Norwegian Breakaway, according to a Bermuda government official quoted Sunday in local press reports. The new ship is scheduled to be christened May 8 in New York City.

Ongoing improvements at the dock, including noise mitigation equipment, plus new pilings and concrete work, are part of a project to prepare the dock to accommodate larger vessels. Government officials had earlier expressed concern that the project would be complete in time for the ship’s maiden call.

Heritage Wharf can currently accommodate ships of up to 1,020 feet in length, according to Bermuda Department of Tourism officials. Modifications will allow ships of up to 1,100 feet to dock at the pier; Norwegian Breakaway will measure 1,062 feet in length. “The government is confident that we will deliver a structure that befits a ship of this stature and that the dock will be prepared to receive this ship from its maiden voyage,” said Trevor Moniz, minister of public works in a Bermuda Sun article that quoted a government press release.
