Colombia’s Medellin Bids for 2015 UNWTO General Assembly Host

On Tuesday night, Medellin took over Victoria Falls at the Royal Livingstone Hotel in Zambia with a pitch to candidates attending the Global Summit of UNWTO (UN World Tourism Organization) – and it was Colombian style.

A delegation of 45 included a chef, the food, and the music, together with impressive high-tech video scenes.

The Secretary General, ministers, and delegates from around the world danced until the early hours in the morning. Medellin went out of its way to pitch their city to host the 2015 UNWTO conference.

Adding to the success were the smiling faces and happy attitudes of their Zambian host. The event should go on the calendar as one of the party highlights of the UNWTO 2013 General Assembly in Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The World Tourism Organization since its inception, and the organization that followed, looked to organize events in different continents where representatives of the member countries are gathered. It is a healthy practice that enables them to see the sites, the available service, the attractions, and the products that are offered by the host country.

Tourism in the Americas has a considerable growth in recent years and many countries located in South America are continuously looking to incorporate innovative offers to reach international tourism. Such is the case in Colombia, which has regained a position in the global market and has grown its tourism volumes that are widely acclaimed internationally.

Medellin is one of these cities in Colombia and it wants the UNWTO General Assembly in 2015 to be in their city.
