Disney Magic to Conjure $3 Million for Nassau

The Bahamas could be feeling Disney’s magic as tourism officials are projecting millions in profits now that the company has officially added another ship to its Nassau itinerary. Director of Cruise Development at the Ministry of Tourism and Aviation Carla Stuart revealed to Guardian Business that Disney Magic will commence three-to-four day Caribbean cruises in April.
Stuart noted that the estimated revenue from this cruise ship would be based on imposed taxes and purchases made by the ship’s passengers. “Based on preliminary estimates, The Bahamas could potentially receive $648,000 in head taxes and other fees. Passengers on the Magic are expected to spend $2,391,480,” she said.
The announcement is good news for industry partners that service this sector. Stuart further noted that this is not first time the Magic is coming to The Bahamas, as Grand Bahama was reportedly one of its stops in the early 2000s.
“We welcome the Magic to Nassau once again. This announcement is good news for all of our industry partners who service this sector - excursion operators, merchants, restaurant owners, taxis, straw vendors, etc.,” Stuart explained.
He pointed out that adding Nassau to the itinerary is a win-win situation for all, as tourism officials continue to work with their partners to improve the visitor experience. The Magic will be making 15 additional visits to Nassau this year.
The cruise line is also moving the Disney Wonder cruise ship to Miami this year and will offer four and five night cruises to The Bahamas and the western Caribbean. The four and five night cruises will have a variety of itineraries. Ports of call may include Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Key West, Nassau, and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay.
At full capacity, the Magic can accommodate up to 36,000 passengers. This announcement comes after Tourism Director General David Johnson told Guardian Business the cruise industry is stronger than ever and is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. He revealed his team is planning on further expanding the sector throughout the Family Islands.
