Dredging of Santo Domingo Harbor Looks to Berth Big Cruise Ships

Even the biggest cruise ships will be able to dock easily at Don Diego and Sans Souci ports during their tours of the Caribbean islands, after by the end of November the company CMP International concludes the dredging the harbor of the Ozama river on the  Caribbean.

CMP president Luis Contreras, quoted by news source listin.com.do, said the enormous barge and gigantic cranes with “spoon” type suction is capable of storing tons of sediments and trash removed from both shores where two terminals of Don Diego and Sans Souci ports are located.

Moved by two powerful tugboats the barge takes the sediments as far out as 15 miles to a deposit point out at sea authorized by the Environment Ministry. The executive said the dredging will last around 90 days given the wide perimeter and depths of more than 10 meters.

Contreras said it’s the first time an entirely Dominican company conducts this type of dredging. He said there was a time when contractors had to rent large cranes, barges and tugboats from foreign companies, which charged high insurance premiums for their personnel and equipment, besides the rent.

Contreras said the dredging to guarantee the arrival of any size ships forms part of the project of the company Sans Souci Tourist Investments (ITSS), aimed at turn the city of Santo Domingo into one of the great stops for Caribbean cruises.
