Haiti Works Hard to Make Tourism Count Again

In its struggle to overcome the devastating 2010 earthquake that leveled much of Haiti’s capital in Port au Prince, the country is making inroads into putting itself back on the tourist map.
Once lauded as the “Pearl of the Antilles,” Haiti’s resilience is once again on display as cruise lines and international hotel brands reenter the country now that tourism shows more promise.
In an article for the Daily Mail, Judith Baker writes: “One month into the job, the new Haitian ambassador to the UK, Bocchit Edmond, says his country is a 'mystery, but one which visitors enjoy discovering. The rich culture, the diversity and the beauty will delight. The only danger in Haiti is once you go, you may not want to leave.’”
At the moment, Haiti is still sparsely developed but many international brands are looking at investing in the area.
“Carnival, is considering investing $70 million at Ile de la Tortue off the north coast of Haiti, writes Baker, “and more and more tour operators are offering excursions to the Citadelle, which some are mooting as the 'Caribbean's Machu Picchu.’”
