The visit of El Caballo Mayor (The Big Horse), as he’s known worldwide, is part of the program of the 35th edition of the Fiesta del Caribe or Fiesta del Fuego, a celebration scheduled for July 3-9. Mr. Ventura will share the limelight with a couple of other big stars from the Dominican Republic, crooner Maridalia Hernandez, a founding member of the Juan Luis Guerra & 440 band, and Jochy Sanchez, the leader of La Gallera band.
Following the announcement trumpeted by the Fiesta del Fuego organizers, great expectations have built on in the local population that has always loved the music of Johnny Ventura –a performer who’s still all the rage in Santiago de Cuba and continues to hit the airwaves with such smash hits as Patacón pisao, Capullo y Sorullo and Matilda, Matilda.
The Big Horse’s upcoming performance has already become one of the most memorable moments of this year’s Fiesta del Caribe, dedicated this time around to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the city of Santiago de Cuba, with the Bahamas featured as the guest country.
Roughly two thousand foreign and national artists are expected to attend this celebration, all of them as bearers of the most genuine cultural expressions of the rich Caribbean region.
