SuperClubs to Buy Out Jamaican Government Partner

“Super-inclusive” Caribbean resort operator SuperClubs is buying out Jamaica’s Urban Development Corporation (UDC), its government partner in the 200-acre Breezes Grand Negril resort, said Zein Issa-Nakash, SuperClubs’ vice-president of marketing and environmental affairs.

A Jamaican government official said Thursday, however, that the transaction has not been finalized. Issa-Nakash said SuperClubs this week accepted an offer from UDC, a government agency, for its stake in the property. She did not disclose the price.

SuperClubs originally purchased the 22-acre resort with UDC for $18 million in 2000 with each party owning 50 percent of the property.  

“The consideration for this transaction is still in progress and no agreement has yet been reached. The ownership structure therefore remains unchanged,” according to a UDC statement in the Jamaica Gleaner.

SuperClubs is also closing on the sale of the Breezes Trelawny Resort & Spa, purchased in 2000; the buyer and terms of the sale have not been disclosed. Faced with growing competition from significantly larger properties in Jamaica and the Caribbean, SuperClubs will seek to expand several of its remaining 10 properties, Issa-Nakash said, beginning with the Breezes Bahamas resort.

“We have approved working drawings for an expansion of Breezes Bahamas,” with work to begin within the next year, she said.
