Surinam Airways to Connect Cayenne and Miami

Surinam Airways (SLM), in response to an email inquiry, has confirmed media reports in French Guiana that the airline will connect Cayenne to Miami, Florida, from April 5, with stops in Paramaribo and Georgetown, Guyana.

The weekly flight will depart Cayenne on Saturdays at 7pm. SLM wants to connect French Guianese to its network of destinations since market research confirms that many from the neighboring European Union territory travel by land to Paramaribo to take advantage of SLM’s competitive airfares to Miami and elsewhere.

This will save many French Guianese the hassle of the overland journey to Paramaribo, where they must stay overnight at hotel to fly to Miami and other cities in SLM’s network.

Surinam Airways is also looking to expand into northern Brazil and, in particular, the cities of Macapa, Belem and Forteleza in the near future. SLM will also add another aircraft on the mid-Atlantic route.

SLM returned to French Guiana last year after France forced it to suspend flying to Cayenne by revoking its permit. This was done to protect Air Caraibes, a local airline based in Cayenne. SLM also connected Cayenne with Belem, Brazil, a lucrative route that the Suriname carrier is flying again.

According to travel agents in Cayenne, SLM will offer a competitive airfare around 675 euros.

While no official announcement has been made as a result of lengthy negotiations with the French authorities, SLM will increase the frequency during peak season.
