Tropical storm Hanna has been heading toward the Bahamas, Turks & Caicos and the U.S. southeast coast in a piecemeal, erratic movement. A hurricane warning remains in effect for the central Bahamas, southeastern Bahamas and the Turks & Caicos Islands.
Royal Caribbean International altered the itinerary of Mariner of the Seas out of Port Canaveral, given Hurricane Gustav’s location and projected path. Hurricane Gustav made landfall Tuesday on Haiti with winds up to 90 mph and was expected to head toward Cuba, Jamaica and possibly the Cayman Islands.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) forecast for the six-month Atlantic hurricane season, which begins June 1, calls for 12 to 16 named storms, including six to nine hurricanes.
As of 8 p.m. Friday night a hurricane watch remained in effect for the northwestern Bahamas, according to the National Hurricane Center. A tropical storm warning remained in effect for the central and northwestern Bahamas, but the watch and warning was reportedly going to be discontinued on Sunday night.
Tropical Storm Noel pummeled the Dominican Republic early this week, leaving at least 41 dead, 38 missing, over 50,000 evacuated and some 14,500 people sheltered in refugee centers, over 39 communities cut off by flood waters and 12,636 houses affected by the flooding , as reported by the Emergency Operations Center (COE) at press time.
Hurricane Felix passed over 100 km north of Aruba at approximately 10.30 am on Sunday, September 2, 2007.
