Spanish airline Iberia continues to strengthen its intercontinental footprint, with growing connections across the United States and Latin America. During World Travel Expo Miami 2025, Adriana Ron-Pedrique, Iberia’s Portfolio Manager in the U.S., shared insights on the airline’s performance, its transatlantic alliance, and the challenges facing the aviation sector.

Strengthening Transatlantic Ties Through Miami

Ron-Pedrique highlighted the value of the Atlantic Joint Business (AJB) alliance with American Airlines, which creates extensive connectivity and synergies through Miami International Airport. Despite political and economic shifts in the U.S., she noted that demand remains strong on both sides of the Atlantic: “American travelers are increasingly eager to visit Europe, and Europeans are more interested in flying to the U.S.—a dynamic that has benefited Iberia.”

Iberia has also boosted direct links between Europe and Latin America. With three daily flights to Argentina and new services to Brazil—including Recife and Fortaleza—the airline’s strategy focuses less on U.S. hubs and more on direct routes. Even so, Miami remains a key gateway thanks to its large Spanish and Latino community that resonates with Iberia’s cultural identity.

Flight Plan 2030: New Routes and Fleet Innovation

At the core of Iberia’s growth is its Flight Plan 2030, which includes expanding frequencies, adding seats, and opening new routes. A key milestone is the launch of Orlando–Madrid flights with four weekly frequencies, designed to meet the rising demand for direct connections to Europe.

The carrier is also promoting its Stopover Madrid program, allowing travelers to spend up to nine days in Spain’s capital before continuing to other European destinations. While particularly successful in Colombia, Iberia plans to elevate its presence in the U.S. market as part of its 2030 vision.

Fleet modernization is central to this plan. Iberia has already deployed the new Airbus A321XLR, operating its first flight to Boston—the first airline worldwide to do so. The aircraft has since been introduced on routes to Washington and will soon serve additional destinations in the U.S. and northern Brazil. With 30% lower fuel consumption, the aircraft underscores Iberia’s commitment to sustainability.

Competing With a Spanish Flavor

When asked about competition with non-IAG European carriers, Ron-Pedrique pointed to Iberia’s focus on punctuality—having been recognized as Europe’s most punctual airline in recent years—combined with a strong Premium Leisure offering. From Spanish-inspired cuisine to onboard service and cultural touches, Iberia aims to create a travel experience that makes Ibero-American passengers feel at home from the moment they board.

Although fares and promotions in the U.S. market align with AJB partners, Iberia differentiates itself through its cultural experience: language, food, and hospitality designed to bring Spain closer to every passenger.

Sustainability: From Fleet to SAF

Sustainability is a key pillar of Iberia’s international operations. Beyond introducing fuel-efficient XLR aircraft, the airline is exploring initiatives such as allowing travelers to redeem loyalty points for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The goal, Ron-Pedrique emphasized, is to integrate every branch of the company into initiatives that accelerate the transition to a more responsible and sustainable aviation future.
