Electra.aero has officially filed for FAA Part 23 type certification of its groundbreaking EL9 hybrid-electric Ultra Short aircraft, marking its transition from experimental development into a formal regulatory pathway. The application moves the nine-passenger aircraft from the FAA’s Emerging Technology Division into the Aircraft Certification Service, a milestone that positions the EL9 for future commercial passenger and cargo operations.

The company’s submission includes FAA Form 8110-12, a Project Specific Certification Plan, and the EL9 Aircraft Specification, outlining its proposed safety standards and compliance approach. This filing follows years of collaboration with FAA experts and reflects Electra’s confidence in the maturity of its innovative technology. CEO Marc Allen emphasized that the aircraft’s progress “signals that the EL9 is fast becoming a reality,” showcasing its potential to reshape regional air mobility.

A core feature of the EL9 is its Ultra Short performance, enabled by a hybrid-electric propulsion system and blown-lift wing design that channels airflow over the wing to generate extraordinary lift. This allows the aircraft to take off and land in as little as 150 feet, opening the door to thousands of Ultra Short Access Points such as small airfields, helipads, industrial sites, docks, or remote clearings — all while maintaining the speed, comfort, and safety of a fixed-wing aircraft.

Electra has designed the EL9 around a new regional mobility model called Direct Aviation, offering quiet, point-to-point flights that bypass congested hubs. With its payload capacity, hybrid-electric efficiency, and extremely short takeoff capability, the aircraft is positioned to connect communities, employment centers, logistics hubs, and isolated areas more efficiently than traditional regional aircraft.

The company will now proceed through the detailed phases of the FAA’s certification process, including evaluation and acceptance of its compliance and conformity plans. As Electra continues its work toward certification, the EL9 stands out as one of the most promising aircraft designed to redefine future short-range and regional aviation.
