South Korea has once again postponed its decision on granting Google permission to export detailed mapping data to international servers, delaying full Google Maps functionality in the country until at least October 2025.

Currently, the app lacks real-time navigation capabilities due to strict data security laws, despite South Korea’s advanced technological environment. As a result, visitors face difficulty navigating cities and public transit.

Tourism officials and tech advocates warn that the delay is eroding the visitor experience, especially for self-guided tourists reliant on familiar navigation tools. The absence of Google Maps also undermines South Korea’s travel competitiveness.

Local mapping platforms like Naver and Kakao fulfill domestic needs, but lack the global audience familiarity and seamless cross-border integration.

The government continues to cite national security concerns and pushback from local industry players as reasons for staying cautious, even though Google insists its data passes all security reviews.

Industry stakeholders emphasize that tourism growth may hinge on resolving this issue, urging action to ensure tourists can navigate the country effortlessly.
