Spain Implements Digital Entry System for Non-EU Visitors

Spain has introduced a new digital entry system for non-EU travelers, streamlining the process of entering the country through biometric verification and pre-clearance technology. The system, known as Smart Border Spain, is being rolled out in major airports including Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat.
The project, developed in coordination with the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), allows travelers to register online before arrival, reducing waiting times and improving security.
Officials say the move is part of Spain’s digital transformation strategy, designed to enhance the visitor experience while maintaining efficient border management.
Travel industry analysts have praised the system for aligning with global trends toward digital travel facilitation, following similar implementations in Singapore and the UAE.
The Spanish Ministry of Tourism expects the program to handle over 30 million non-EU passengers in its first year of operation. The system’s AI-based verification tools are also expected to reduce identity fraud.
Spain continues to position itself as a leader in tourism innovation, blending technology with hospitality to strengthen its status as Europe’s top travel destination.
