Americans to Shell Out 25% More on Travel than in 2019

American travelers are now spending 25% more per trip in 2023 versus 2019. Travelers spent almost $4,000 per trip.At the same time, American travelers still do not make as many trips in 2023 as in 2019. Frequent travelers - those who made at least four leisure trips a year - represent only 28% of travelers in 2023, compared to 40% in 2019.
"American travelers may be taking fewer trips now, but they are making the most of them, spending more time with family and friends and booking more tours, activities, attractions and other travel experiences," said Douglas Quinby, co-founder and CEO of Arival. “Travelers took nearly twice as many excursions per trip this year compared to 2019, and they also spent more on activities and attraction tickets. “Demand for tours and attractions continues to grow as travelers increasingly prioritize experiences when planning their trips and setting their spending priorities.”
Travel to Europe grew substantially in 2023. 14% of US travelers reported visiting Europe in 2023, up from just 10% in 2021. At the same time, domestic travel, which soared during the pandemic, is lagging behind, since only 59% went on vacation to the US in 2023, compared to 70% in 2021.
The online research surveyed 1,000 qualified U.S. active travelers in fall 2023 about their behavior, preferences, attitudes and intent for travel experiences – including day trips, activities, attractions and events.
With travel to Europe from the US expected to continue to increase in 2024, the habits of American travelers are expected to be among the key topics at the upcoming Arival 360 event in Berlin. Hundreds of delegates are expected to gather in March to discuss the most pressing topics, issues and trends that will drive the global experiences industry in 2024.
