(AP) - As Labor Day weekend approaches, travelers should be prepared for potential cancellations and delays due to the high volume of travelers. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) expects to screen over 17 million people, setting a record for this holiday period. Domestic travel bookings are up 9% from last year, indicating that airports, highways, and tourist destinations will be crowded.

Gasoline prices have decreased compared to last year, with the national average at $3.44 per gallon. Electric vehicle owners will find varied prices at commercial charging stations, depending on the state. Meanwhile, airfares have dropped by 7.1% since June, reflecting the end of the peak summer travel season.

Travelers should be strategic about when they hit the road. Thursday and Friday afternoon are expected to be the busiest times, with heavy traffic persisting throughout the weekend. For the return journey, Monday will see traffic congestion all day long, so plan accordingly.

Friday will be the busiest day at airports, with TSA screening an estimated 2.86 million people. American Airlines is gearing up for its largest Labor Day operation ever, with 6,400 flights on Thursday and Friday. Travelers should arrive early and be prepared for longer-than-usual wait times.

In case of flight delays or cancellations, it's crucial to check your itinerary before leaving for the airport. If a flight is canceled, contact the airline's help center or rebook online for faster service. Keep in mind that airport agents may be overwhelmed, so consider using international help numbers to bypass long waits on U.S. lines.

Airlines are required to refund passengers for canceled flights, including extra fees, but cash compensation is not mandatory. If you're stranded overnight, ask the airline about covering hotel, meal, and transportation costs for controllable disruptions. Keep receipts for any out-of-pocket expenses, as they may be needed for reimbursement later.
