UN Tourism Advocates for Enhanced Biodiversity in National Policies

On International Biodiversity Day, the United Nations Tourism released a new report titled "Integrating Biodiversity into National Tourism Policies," which highlights the critical role of nature in tourism.
Despite 95% of national tourism policies recognizing nature as a key asset, the report reveals a lack of detailed sustainable management plans.
The report examines the integration of biodiversity in 80 national tourism policies, focusing on diversity within species, between species, and ecosystems. It consists of four detailed subsections that evaluate how biodiversity values are embedded in political narratives, policy statements, strategic programs, and monitoring commitments. This comprehensive analysis aims to provide policymakers, stakeholders, and the global community with valuable insights, encouraging more robust actions towards sustainability.
United Nations Secretary-General of Tourism Zurab Pololikashvili emphasized the significance of the report, stating, "As custodians of the Earth's natural resources, it is crucial that we foster a harmonious relationship between tourism and the environment. This publication not only highlights the interdependence of biodiversity and tourism but also underlines the essential role that well-integrated policies play in ensuring a sustainable future for all."
The report aligns with the theme of the International Day for Biological Diversity 2024, "Be part of the Plan," which calls for concerted efforts to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. It supports the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, adopted at the United Nations Conference on Biodiversity COP-15 in December 2022.
Additionally, this report complements the recently launched publication "Nature Positive Travel & Tourism in Action," which promotes environmentally responsible practices within the tourism sector. Together, these publications underscore the importance of integrating biodiversity considerations into tourism policies to achieve sustainable development goals.
