The U.S. State Department has issued updated travel alerts for Honduras and Costa Rica, encouraging travelers to stay informed about potential safety risks. These advisories, released on December 10, 2024, aim to help tourists make secure and informed decisions when planning their trips to these popular Central American destinations.

Honduras now has a Level 3 "Reconsider Travel" warning for the Gracias a Dios department due to elevated crime levels, including homicides, kidnappings, and gang-related activities. Limited law enforcement resources in this area heighten the risks. However, popular islands like Roatan, Utila, and Guanaja remain much safer, with enhanced police presence and thriving tourism scenes. Travelers should avoid walking or driving at night, steer clear of public transportation, and remain vigilant against potential crimes in mainland cities.

Although Costa Rica remains a favorite destination for its rainforests, beaches, and wildlife, the State Department urges “Increased Caution” due to a rise in petty theft and violent crimes, including armed robberies and sexual assaults. Tourists should avoid poorly lit areas, secure their belongings, and refrain from displaying valuables. These precautions will help mitigate risks while enjoying Costa Rica’s breathtaking landscapes.

Visitors to both countries are encouraged to prioritize well-policed tourist zones, stay updated on local news, and practice situational awareness. Key safety measures include avoiding nighttime outings, using reliable transportation options, and keeping valuables secure. By following these guidelines, travelers can reduce risks and still enjoy the unique charms of Honduras and Costa Rica.
