The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) and the NGO Mercy Ships have reaffirmed their commitment to global healthcare assistance by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The agreement was formalized during CLIA Cruise Week Europe, held in Rotterdam (Netherlands), strengthening the long-standing collaboration between the two organizations.

This MOU recognizes the strong alliance between CLIA and Mercy Ships and the cruise industry's support for the NGO’s humanitarian mission. Cruise lines collaborate with Mercy Ships through volunteer programs, financial contributions, and in-kind donations, enabling the organization to provide free medical and surgical care to communities with limited access to healthcare services.

Nearly 50 Years of Medical Assistance at Sea

For nearly five decades, Mercy Ships has provided healthcare and free surgeries aboard its hospital ships, serving communities without access to medical services. The organization currently operates the world’s largest private hospital ships, the Africa Mercy® and the Global Mercy™, with a crew of volunteers from more than 60 countries.

In addition to medical care, the NGO offers specialized training to local healthcare professionals, aiming to strengthen health systems and create a lasting impact in the countries it serves.

Since 1978, Mercy Ships has worked in over 55 countries, focusing its efforts on Africa for the past three decades. Each year, more than 2,500 volunteers – including surgeons, dentists, nurses, cooks, and engineers – dedicate their time and skills to improving the lives of those in need.

With this renewed alliance, CLIA and Mercy Ships reaffirm their commitment to a more accessible and equitable healthcare future, leveraging the cruise industry’s resources to generate a positive global impact.
