Royal Caribbean's $600 Million Investment to Transform Mexico's Mahahual Port
The Quintana Roo government, led by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, has announced a significant $600 million investment by Royal Caribbean Group to redevelop the Port of Mahahual. This project aims to drive economic growth in rural communities, promoting sustainable tourism and shared prosperity across the region.
Governor Lezama highlighted that this investment aligns with the state's commitment to environmental protection and community development. "This project not only enhances Mahahual as a key Caribbean destination but also reflects our dedication to sustainability and the well-being of the local population," she noted. The investment follows previous initiatives by Royal Caribbean, such as the Royal Beach Club in Cozumel.
Royal Caribbean International President and CEO Michael Bayley, speaking virtually, outlined plans for the "Perfect Day Mexico" experience at Mahahual, which will accommodate up to 21,000 visitors daily. The development is expected to significantly boost cruise tourism, growing from 2.6 million visitors in its first year to over 5 million by 2033.
The redevelopment will enhance Mahahual's tourism infrastructure and is part of Quintana Roo's State Development Plan, under the New Agreement for Well-being and Development. Coordinated with local agencies and the University of Quintana Roo, the project prioritizes social impact and community involvement, ensuring benefits for the local population.
In addition to creating over 1,000 jobs between 2025 and 2027, the project will include a direct connection to the Limones station of the Mayan Train, encouraging visitors to explore more of the region.
Key figures attending the announcement included Governor Lezama, Verónica Lezama (honorary president of DIF Estatal), State Tourism Secretary Bernardo Cueto, and Vagner Elbiorn, director of the Comprehensive Port Administration.
