China is preparing to unveil its latest engineering marvel — the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, set to become the tallest bridge in the world when it opens in June 2025. Located in the mountainous Guizhou Province in southwest China, this ambitious project is nearing completion and promises to revolutionize transportation in the region.

Soaring 2,051 feet above river level, the new bridge will surpass France’s Millau Viaduct by a remarkable 947 feet. Spanning the dramatic Huajiang Grand Canyon, often referred to as the “earth crack,” the bridge is not only a record-breaker but a critical infrastructure improvement for one of China's most rugged terrains, approximately 800 miles west of Shenzhen.

Once operational, the steel truss suspension bridge, which stretches 9,482 feet in length, will drastically reduce travel time across the canyon from two hours to just one minute. This leap in efficiency is part of China’s broader push to enhance infrastructure connectivity in underdeveloped, mountainous regions.

The bridge’s main structure, completed in early 2025, consists of about 22,000 tons of steel trusses, the equivalent weight of three Eiffel Towers. According to project officials, 95% of the construction has already been completed, with a full opening to traffic expected in the second half of 2025.

Nearly half of the world's tallest bridges are already located in Guizhou, and the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is poised to be the crown jewel of them all. As Zhang Shenglin, chief engineer of Guizhou Highway Group, stated, the project represents not only a landmark achievement in civil engineering but also a symbol of China’s growing infrastructure prowess.
