Spain is grappling with a widespread power outage that has severely affected airports, train services, and urban transportation networks throughout the country.

The blackout, which began in the early afternoon, has caused major delays and cancellations at key airports including Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez, Barcelona-El Prat, and Málaga-Costa del Sol. According to AENA, Spain’s airport operator, many flights are experiencing delays due to disrupted check-in systems, security procedures, and baggage handling services. Passengers have been advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport and to expect significant waiting times.

High-speed trains (AVE) operated by Renfe have also been impacted, with numerous services between Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, and Valencia delayed or suspended. Urban metro systems in Madrid and Barcelona reported temporary closures on several lines, leading to overcrowded stations and traffic congestion as commuters sought alternative transport.

The Spanish government has activated emergency response teams and is coordinating with regional authorities to restore electricity as swiftly as possible. Energy officials cited a technical failure in a major transmission line as the possible cause of the outage, but investigations are ongoing.

Transport Minister Óscar Puente stated in a press conference that restoring operations at airports and railways is a “national priority” and urged citizens to remain patient. "We are working closely with operators to normalize the situation as soon as possible," he said.

Authorities have not reported any serious accidents related to the outage so far, but travelers across Spain face hours of disruption and uncertainty as the country works to recover from the unexpected crisis.
