Preps Under Way for Sustainable Tourism Conference in Guyana

Preparations are in full swing for the hosting of the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s thirteenth annual Sustainable Tourism Conference here next month. Acting Tourism Minister, Irfaan Alli reiterated that the event will place Guyana in the international spotlight.

The Minister noted that the tourism ministry is looking to capitalize on opportunities outside of the core benefits.

“The leverage and coverage that would give Guyana would advance our products would bring more awareness, more education and all of it would resound to the greater benefit of our sector”

The Tourism Ministry has established a conference committee, which is working to ensure all arrangements are in place for the event. Additionally, an exhibition will be held to showcase agricultural products that are exported from Guyana.

Tourism operators are also developing a marketing magazine, as well as study tours- which are important to promoting Guyana on the international scene.

Since its successful hosting of the CTO’s sustainable tourism conference in 2000, Guyana has promised to top that accomplishment. This year’s conference will be held from April 15 to 18 under the theme, “Keeping the right balance: sustaining our resources”.

It will explore best practices with regard to tourism sustainability, particularly interconnecting biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation initiatives. The conference is also expected to provide new insight on evolving special interest tourism niches, such as adventure tourism.
