The prime minister of Belize, Said Musa, on Thursday accepted a check for $200,000 from the Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize, Ting Joseph Shih. The money is intended for hurricane relief efforts in the wake of hurricane destruction and recent floods.
A well-organized area of low pressure, associated with a tropical wave, is centered about 300 miles east-southeast of the Windward Islands and is moving westward at about 15 mph. Shower and thunderstorm activity has been increasing, and a tropical depression could form later Friday morning.
Virgin Atlantic flew thousands of food packs and blankets to Jamaica in the wake of Hurricane Dean. Virgin Atlantic was the first UK airline to fly to Montego Bay, in the north of the Caribbean island, since the hurricane affected the region and closed the country’s two main airports.
The Hilton Cancun Golf & Spa Resort did not suffer any structural damage during Hurricane Dean. The hotel, which was evacuated as a precautionary measure, will reopen for business August 23.
Couples Resorts announced that all four of its properties -Couples Ocho Rios, Couples Sans Souci, Couples Negril and Couples Swept Away- are open and ready to welcome guests. Only minor landscaping damages were reported at each resort.
Barceló Hotels & Resorts reported that its hotels in Cancun and along Mexico's Riviera Maya coast have not sustained any major damage from Hurricane Dean and remain fully operational with all services and power.
