Ministry of Tourism officials have estimated that The Bahamas lost close to $1 million in room revenue as a result of cancellations due to Hurricane Ike.
Providenciales in Turks and Caicos, has reopened for business after Hurricane Ike caused minor cosmetic and landscaping damage. While the southern cays of Grand Turk, Salt Cay and South Caicos were hit the hardest at a reported 80 percent damage to homes and businesses, this is not the case for Providenciales. Flights will resume Monday, September 15. Ocean Club Resorts was closed during the storm for scheduled annual renovations and will now re-open October 24.
The Turks & Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association (TCHTA) reported that it is largely “business as usual” for the majority of its member properties and services catering to tourism in the island chain. Most properties in Providenciales, the main tourism center, suffered only minimal damage during the recent Hurricanes Hanna and Ike that passed by the islands.
Cuban Ministry of Tourism (MINTUR) reported on Thursday to have resumed operations with the arrival of flights from America and Europe after hurricane Ike left the Island. The report indicated some 30 thousand tourists have recently arrived at different resorts throughout the Island.
